Sam Lipson

Current Director of Environmental Health at Cambridge Public Health Department responsible for the evaluation of environmental health risks within the community. Extensive work with community processes, evaluation and communication of hazardous waste site data, exposure risk, and toxic effects associated with known exposures. Established a nationally recognized Healthy Homes program that promotes integration of clinical and environmental management of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Areas of policy expertise include biological safety, asbestos and nanotoxicology. Trained as a chemist with graduate coursework in toxicology and immunology.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Cambridge Department of Public Health (Cambridge, MA) (1/98 – Present)

Director of Environmental Health: Established Environmental Health Unit to respond to potentially harmful exposures and local environmental health regulations. Initiatives include: full GIS and data inventory of hazardous waste sites, environmental advocacy on behalf of residents, managing the West Nile virus response, regulating and inspecting biotech firms, providing guidance for PPE and exposure risk within emergency response planning, environmental dispute resolution, home intervention services (asthma & lead), providing indoor air quality services, and addressing other chemical exposure and toxicology concerns via investigation, consultation and referral.

Graduate Research Fellow: Conducted enzyme assays, ion chromatography, HPLC, and analyses of cellular extracts for NOAA Musselwatch program.
